My name is Autumn Matthews. I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (#139549). I have previous experience working as a Social Worker for two nonprofit foster care and adoption agencies for 10 years. I also have experience working with children and families at school sites and in a clinic nonprofit setting for over 6 years as a Clinician, Supervisor, and Parent Partner. I work best with people who are open to looking at things with a different perspective and trying new things (even "outside of the box" approaches) with the belief that everyone has the potential for change and to make a better life. My approach I don't usually identify a specific theoretical approach I work with as I use bits and pieces from several orientations. One main area I do focus on is the client is the one in charge, has potential for change and growth, and can be opened to new ways of thinking once given the opportunity. I do agree with the person-centered, client-centered approaches. I do attempt to utilize a trauma-informed approach to my work. My focus I have worked with all types of clients, ranging from ages 3-70, with challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma Hx, life challenges, and regular life struggles. I am open to working with LQBTQ+ as I am an ally. My communication style I am usually a relaxed, informal type of person, who does try to utilize humor, sarcasm, and positive tones. I have been told I have a soft, kind tone, but also am more than willing to laugh with a client. My journey to mental healthcare I took a psychology class in high school as a senior, and I have been fascinated by people and their lives ever since. I find the adaptability and capability of people to be an exciting prospect. My goals for you I encourage clients to set goals, both short-term and long-term goals, with the understanding that these goals can change and adapt as the person moves along the process.
